Village of Lithopolis

Lithopolis gets its distinctive name from the Greek words "litho" and "polis" which, when translated together, mean "city of stone." This unique name is attributed to the nearby quarry located in the ravine, which runs north of the Village, and where Lithopolis free stone was once quarried.

The Wagnalls Memorial Foundation, our town's treasure, is constructed of native free stone in the Tudor-Gothic style. Wagnalls was created for and gifted to the Board of Directors for use by the residents of Lithopolis and Bloom Township by Mabel Wagnalls Jones (in memory of her parents, Anna Willis and Adam Wagnalls, co-founder of Funk & Wagnalls Publishing). This gem provides people living in the area and its visitors with a center for educational, cultural and literary arts activities.

We invite you to discover The Wagnalls Memorial Foundation and explore the Village's natural ravine. Relax at Wagner Gazebo in Wilson Park or stroll through town to glimpse wonderful examples of Pre-Civil War and early-1900 architecture.

Browse quaint shops full of antiques, fine art and "eclectibles" (eclectic collectibles) and savor lunch or dinner in a folksy atmosphere. Stop in for a visit. Stay for a lifetime.
